That was the deal I struck with myself, back when the whole thing started. Prove it small first: one, then a handful, then more again, until the number that actually mattered held steady. Once that held, the plan was sound. Everyone round the table could see that.

What the plan couldn’t tell me, on any given morning, was whether last night’s work had actually gone the way the update said it had.

The update said it had. Clean. Finished.

I went and looked anyway. Not at the summary. At the thing the summary was describing.

AI hands people that same clean, finished account now, and somebody still has to go and look behind it before they’ll put their name to it.

I never signed off a night’s work I hadn’t seen with my own eyes. Not even once we were running at full scale, and the numbers on the desk were good news.
